EVENING SONG It is now the evening time With golden light scattered Across the fields where Black cattle graze. I have just returned from Working through the day— This flow of work is like being Carried along on a river Through the days which Blend together in a stream. Every morning, I rise to pray, Prepare to go to work, Then launch out to do my best To accomplish the goal, Pushing hard through the Passing hours until its time to Stop, load up the tools And head for home… Where I arrive, grateful For this peaceful sanctuary, Even more beautiful from being Out in the harried world. Yet so tired, I stagger Into this little house, take a Cool shower to cool down This hot body, and then Lie down to rest and nap In my cloud like bed. From my pillow, the mirrors Reflect the garden, the fields, And the mountains as the sun Slowly sets and night comes on, As I blissfully lie in repose— Another day done, with All work complete, ready now To drink the evening, sweet as Champagne in a crystal glass, Ready for whatever the night May bring in prayerful solitude In this sweet field of dreams— Carried along on wings of love, Aware, conscious and free. SWEET SANCTUARY When I devote my mind, Heart and soul to prayer, I discover my Beloved is right Here beside and inside me. It is only myself who becomes Distracted or deluded and loses My way in the darkness until I must cry out in prayer for help. Then, the Lord appears, Always lovingly embracing and Lifting me up and setting this one Upon my heart’s dharma path again. Following the spiritual path is life’s Most challenging and necessary task, Overwhelmingly full of having to face Our own darkness, pain and fear. There is no safety for me anywhere Except at my inner Lord’s feet— But it is I who must seek this sweet Sanctuary in prayerful supplication. The Lord helps those who choose To help themselves by praying through, For even the Beloved will not do The inner work I alone must achieve. October 11, 2020
