SEARCHING FOR MY FATHER’S GRAVE I was far away When my Dad died, Entangled in seemingly Urgent things so Deeply needed that I could not leave When I got the call, Even missing his funeral, Though as soon as I Could,I flew as fast As a cross country jet Could take me, arriving In time to speak At his memorial service. I was not here For his illness, His cancer growing Through his final days, Just speaking by phone, His voice just a whisper As he said to me Over and over again The words I had longed To hear for years, now Going directly from his Wide open heart to mine— “I love you son And we will be all right.” This is my first Visit to his grave, Coming today with my Mother and one of my Daughters, searching through An ocean of white grave Stones in long tidy rows, Long straight lines Of white marble crosses— But we did find him, Eventually, far in the back, Under a huge sheltering oak… And now that I am finally here, Years after his passing, My grief at our Too short relationship Breaks through as I become A son grieving our loss Of a truly great man— Hot tears erupt as My heart now feels the Impact of his passing, How much we all miss Him now and always will. A Heart Felt Prayer: BECOMING THE MAN I AM MEANT TO BE O Lord, Thank you for leading And guiding me, For bringing me back to You When I go astray, For never forgetting me Even when I forget You And keeping me coming Ever closer to You, Day by day. Thank you for hearing My criers and my prayers, And for all the times You’ve reached down To lift me up When I was lost and hurting On the sea of despair. O Lord, You know that in my heart, It has always been true That all I really want to do Is to love and serve You! Every new day now, I am rising up singing Your praise and glories, As I am feeling Your sweet Love Flowing through my wide open heart, And You heal this son of a Lifetime of pain and tears, Always lifting me up Higher and higher as I Become the man You will and want me to be. The first poem broke my heart. The loss, grief, and love are felt so deeply. The second poem is quite invigorating and hope-giving. Thank you for your vulnerability and openness to share your self with us.
