TO TOUCH YOU IS A BETTER FATE Than All I May Ever Do In Our Loving Space Of Two Hearts Burning As One —For Joan Here, with darkness everywhere, Raindrops coming down the Window panes, you beside me, Silent, both of us silent, I lean to kiss you And find It is all a fantasy. The walls fade and I am Back on my little bed And you are gone over the miles Dappled with country, again— And I am torn like a page From a book of our possibilities, Crumpled and thrown into A corner where I will Slowly straighten out. These are the darkest times Of washed up and lonely days when Nothing happening can be explained In a way my heart can understand. I come so close As to almost touch you, Almost forget we are apart. Then The wind rustles the trees, Pulls me down from our high And loving spaces, Sets me down on hard ground In the dark where I am walking around the ponds, Silver from a sliver of moon, With black diamonds sparkling, And do it without tearing Myself on each thing That might be you. I seem to see You move among the trees, touching Leaves, pulling them down around Your lovely body, and you Gaze at me with eyes That speak of sameness of feeling. I want to run to you, Forgetting this troublesome distance, But I do not move, Not wanting to lose this sweet Moment shared, letting The feeling itself draw us closer And closer— And I know that To touch you is A better fate than all I may ever do, than all My words can ever express As our hearts burn as one In our loving place Where distance has no sway. SWINGING ALONE AND SILENT As You Are Thinking Of Me And I Am Thinking Of You —For Joan Alone and silent, Swinging On a child’s swing In the park Late at night, The frosted trees, The endless swing Arcing while You are far away, Thinking of me As I am Thinking of you. Time almost stops As I go on Swinging swinging swinging, Alone and silent, a Brightness in A very dark place— As you Are thinking of me, As I am thinking Of you… Swinging, Late at night, Alone and silent.
