Through The Long and Lonely Night I strike out in the Snow, homeward bound, Crossing through deep drifts Of fallen flakes in The silence of the night, On trails disappeared Under a glistening blanket of white, Along torrential creeks And thundering waterfalls, Up ravines and steep Canyon walls, Going back finally To my warm house And beloved family After days and hours Of intense solitude… Carrying a song of joy, The peace of fulfillment That comes only through Having accomplished the task And done the inner work I set out to do. Gone now are the doubts And fears and painful hesitation, The lingering, leering confusion That often descends on The eve of some great upward Transitions… I stayed alone Until the inner battle was Waged and won, the inner storm Confronted and conquered, Even though many times I thought (and may yet think) It hopeless and myself Irretrievably lost. Now, I link a line Of tracks across The virgin snow, Finding the way Through the dark woods On a path I can’t see But only know, Soaring inwardly in Love and light Through the long And lonely night I go. Out Of The Ashes Of The Old We are selling pieces of my past On the street in a rummage sale… There, spread out on tables and blankets, Are the remains of my dreams of family, The remains of an ideal marriage, Parts of our dream house that was never built. As I call out the prices and haggle With those who have come to look through all the remains, I grieve and let go and have joy all at once That these things will now go to others To be part of their lives and schemes. Letting go creates space and leads To openings for having a new life and New family and new love that now pours into The void left behind by rapidly departing beloveds. I now choose to let go of holding onto the past And embrace this new eternal present joyously. Out of the ashes of the old life and What once was, but is no more, Comes renewal and healing and expanding heart. With each sale, the past dissolves into the present And I now say yes! To all of the love that is here for me. November, 1993

Ancient Irish Blessing Prayer May there always be work For your hands to do… May your purse always Hold a coin or two… May the sun always Shine on your windowpane… May a rainbow be certain To follow each rain… May the hand of a friend Always be near you… May God always fill your heart With gladness to cheer you!
