The Silence of Deep Water The river is shallow here, Under the arching bridge, And the bottom is covered with Smooth, round, slippery stones. The water is so translucent, So perfectly cool on this hot afternoon, So crystal clear that swimming here is Like floating among clouds in the air. Wide winged birds soar over head As I find a big wild river pool, Hollowed out by swift running currents, And when I am sure its deep enough, I leap off an overhanging rock And dive in, pulling my body down, Down through this pure water, Watching the light dappling Everything as the bright sun above Illuminates this pool in golden radiance, And suddenly, in the silence Of the deep water, I feel Myself tuning and turning to the Divine within, who is even Now watching me at play, Cradled in God’s loving arms, Perfectly at peace, and in Love with all that is As the current sweeps Us down stream towards The distant sea. End of the Night Along the shores of An August moonlit night, I roamed alone On silver beaches That have no name Except that which The wind knows. I wandered alone Through the wild storm Of my own suffering, And I broke upon The silent sands Over and over again, Just like the weary waves That sang their surrendering Songs beside me that night. How far can I go? I asked myself, Wanting to go to The edge of the world, So that I could walk Off it, away from sadness And grief, away from Dusty occupations That slowly cover my Eyes and heart in grayness. Though I did not find The edge of the earth On that or any other time, I did come to The end of the night, And the end of the storm, Just through walking and walking Until ends appeared And the new beginning That was meant To be mine arrived. Composed Too tired to compose I just watch The simple moon. June 1975 Reflections I write with the abandon of a child, And the ones with a good heart, Who want to do good things For others and themselves, Who are learning How to love, and be Love In this world of hurt and pain, Where we are all trying To find our way home again, Will see themselves Reflected in these lines. These are such lovely pieces! I especially love "Composed" - so simple, so true.
