In The Space of Our Hearts —for Joan Watching you walk Down the ramp Towards the waiting airliner, I watched us unwillingly Becoming physically separated, As I struggled to remember That we cannot ever be apart In the shared space of our hearts— There, our love flows freely On a level of communion That nothing can Interrupt or diminish. This shifting from Our last sweet embrace To now having our bodies Going in different directions Is our test, our opportunity To live without doubt In that solitude Of our soul’s communing. But as I watch you Until you are gone from view, I panic on rising waves of Overwhelming concerns As my heart gently breaks And rivers of tears flow Down my cheeks, Awash in remembering The creeping pain Of past separations. But in the first few moments, After you have disappeared Into the plane and flown Into the night sky, And we are on our own… I begin to face my solitariness, Feel our inner communion stabilize, And a confident peace Rising against all my fears, As I experience and know for sure That though we are separated, You and I can never actually Be alone and apart In the shared space Of our hearts. My True Work Here On Earth I am working To open the secret place Where all my songs And visions are waiting To be let out of, And I am working To awaken the sleeping Parts of myself, To enlighten the dark places, To spread these wings I feel so tightly folded Against my spiritual body, For I know that, Day by day, my true work While I am here on earth, Is to discover and fulfill My purpose and my mission, To step into the power And potential of all That I truly am, But have not yet Claimed. Everything else I may do Or have or share is Just a means To that end… Which is, of course, Always meant to be Our life’s true and Ever fresh beginning. September 28, 1984
