Helpless At Last: The Story of a Miracle, Part Two
Suddenly, from his numb heart and shattered mind, a new prayer formed itself on his lips, “Lord, I’ve been so faithful all my life, being as good a man and husband as I could be, so why now, when we most need You, have You deserted us?”
Like this, he berated God until the absolute hopelessness of his situation overcame him and torrents of tears streamed down his cheeks.
Then, he started to cry out from the total anguish of his soul and loss—a single word became a scream, ‘Lord! Lord!” As he prayed, “I have no one else but You to turn to for help. Unless you move out for us now, I can’t make it. I am absolutely helpless, helpless, helpless!”
The old man had never prayed so completely, with such fierce focus and determination, in his long life.
In the depths of his prayer, his consciousness began to clear and whispers of peaceful understanding began to dawn.
With his bowed, he realized two things simultaneously—that he was utterly helpless to do anything that would save his beloved’s life except for totally depending upon the Lord…and that whatever the outcome, only the Lord’s will, whatever it might be, could resolve the situation.
At that instant, the old man heard a still calm voice whispering within his heart, “My son, we have heard your prayers. You and yours have always been wrapped in my caring arms, but only in your most helpless state has your heart opened to my heart. All will be well. All is well. I will never forsake my children.”
The old man sat there stunned and amazed.
Never had he experienced the presence of the Lord so near, though he had longed for and sought this experience for more than 50 years.
The last tears fell as a profound and perfect peace swept over him, completely dissolving all his fear and pain.
A blissful smile graced his face, and he knew beyond a shadow of a doubt, the truth of his inner guidance.
With strong and determined steps, he left the river and walked back to his rental car, muttering under his breath, “Thank you Lord!”
He drove to the hospital, cheerfully greeting the now familiar nurses as he passed their station. “Thank you so much for taking good care of my wife!”, he said to both young nurses on duty.
The two nurses looked at each other quizzically, for the old man had been so withdrawn, so silent and brooding since his wife had been brought in.
He opened the door to his wife’s room, but when he walked in, he was astonished to see his wife sitting up in bed.
She threw her arms open and said, “O honey, how I have missed you!”
The old man was speechless as he went into her embrace and for the second time, he broke into tears.
They hugged like teenagers, holding tightly to each other.
“I was afraid I was going to lose you!” He said.
“I was in a very dark place for a long, long time,” she replied, “But then I felt loving arms lifting me up out of that darkness and in an instant, found myself here in this room as a calm voice whispered, “All will be well. All is well.”
They held each other for a long time until the young doctor came into the room, studying a clipboard.
His cool manner disappeared as his jaw dropped at the sight of the two of them beaming with joy.
“Oh my God!” He exclaimed.
The old man turned to him, still holding the hands of his one true love.
“That’s exactly right, son!”
He knew, before any tests or examinations were performed, that his wife was completely healed.
“And Doc,” he continued,”We are going home tomorrow now that my wife is well and doesn’t need you anymore.”
