Helpless At Last: The Story of A Miracle
A Story in 2 parts about how praying through from a humble and helpless heart in a life or death situation creates the space for miraculous divine intervention.
The old man sat on a mossy boulder on the banks of a slow moving muddy river.
This was his special place where he had been coming for many years to pray and figure things out when life became too overwhelming.
But this afternoon, even though it was a sweet spring day with the pageant of nature unfolding all around him like a celebration, being there in his secret sanctuary did not bring him any comfort.
The inner peace and certainty of feeling close to the Lord that always came to him here in this sacred place was eluding him.
His mind and heart were too tormented by sharp edges of pain, confusion, doubt and a terrible spreading fear.
Back in his small town, in a bed in their tiny country hospital, his wife had lain in a coma for the past week.
They had been on their way home from the grocery store, when a drunk driver came speeding and careening through the night into a head on collision with their old car.
The drunk driver walked away without a scratch, as had the old man.
But his wife had been sitting where the drunk’s big pick up truck had smashed into their car and suffered severe injuries.
The fire department volunteers and rescue team had had to use the “jaws of life” to cut through the wreckage to get her mangled body out of the car just before it burst into flames.
Holding her hand, while sitting next to her in the ambulance rushing them to the hospital, the old man had prayed with the most intense prayers of his life…asking, begging and pleading with the Lord to save her life.
He could not bear the thought of losing her, for they shared a very pure, ever expanding love that had blossomed since their first meeting in high school long ago.
Now he spent every hour he was allowed to be with her in her room, beside her bed, praying with a breaking heart for the Lord to bring her back to him and their world.
He lovingly gazed at her still face, just as lovely to him now as when they had been 16 year old sweethearts.
Machines and monitors whirred and displayed her heart rate and vital signs.
Tubes were inserted in several places in her body to deliver medications and nourishment, barely keeping her alive.
Bruises mottled her face, arms, and legs, while bandages covered sewn up lacerations from the accident.
After a week in which she lay perfectly still, barely breathing, with no change in her condition, the old man listened with a heavy heart as the young doctor told him, “I’m sorry to say it , but I see no encouraging signs. The longer she stays comatose, the less likely it is that she will recover enough to even open her eyes. You really need to be considering your options, as only these machines are keeping her alive…”
The young doctor was crisp and business like, unaware of the effect of his words on the old man.
With a quick glance at the still, pale face of the love of his life, the old man turned and left her room without a word.
Now he sat next to the river, engulfed in despair so deep that he could barely breathe, watching the river sliding by, as he struggled with overwhelming fear of losing that which he did not want to live without…..
