IN SOLIDARITY WITH THOSE WHO TOIL
Working in the world of men,
Working in the hot sun
On a hill far above our green
Valley, my heart suddenly opens
To all those doing humble menial labor—
I feel myself sweating beside them
In the fields and vineyards,
In farms and factories and transfer
Yards where not one worker
Speaks english, but whose eyes
Exude understanding brotherhood.
Many times, in times of need,
As on the side of the road
In our broken down motorhome,
All those in expensive shiny cars
Passed us by with disdainful looks
Bespeaking their own importance, far
More than us in their own minds
And yet, it was always a
Humble family in a rusty car
Who would stop, to do whatever
They could, and stay with us
In loving care as if we were relatives
Until we were up and running again
And then offer us their last few
Dollars, simply to help us out
On our journey of life.
As I work so hard, day by day,
I stand in solidarity with all
Those men and women who toil
All around me and I send
Each one my silent blessing
And prayer that all of us
Everywhere who labor, who
Sweat and suffer, receive all that
We need, today and everyday.

THE WORK I WAS SENT HERE TO DO
An inexplicable sadness races
Across my soul with pain so deep
That hot tears fall like rain
And I feel lost, like a man alone
And at sea among stormy dark waves.
This is a sudden major opening of
My heart, closed too long
Without my being aware,
But now being burned open as the
Love of God bathes my mind.
I ask myself—Where is all this
Sadness coming from?
Is it the certainty that someday
My days in this body will come
To an end and then I must
Say goodbye to all I love?
Or is it the sense that
My time is slipping by like
A wide river rushing downstream
And there is so much which
Must be accomplished
But is yet undone?
It feels as if all of the above
And more is coming in from all sides
With questions which sadden me, but
Must be faced, become aware of
And finally really answered.
For me, it has never been enough
Just to live my days
Like a long movie of cycling circles of
Comedy, drama and tragedy.
I am aware that I was born
With a lofty purpose, a mission from
God and a higher destiny
Of serving the suffering ones of humanity—
And I long to fulfill it all
Through doing the work I was
Sent here to do—
While this body still breathes
And this heart still beats.

HOME TO THE SEA
We are lying together on a warm
Gravel beach, simply resting contentedly,
After swimming for hours in this wild river
Of crystal clear water, sweet enough to drink.
We had a clash on our way here,
Separating my beloved and I,
But then, we bridged the gap with
A kiss, standing in this stream
Of cold clear water flowing by.
The wind sighs through the canyon,
As eagles circle high overhead,
And the late afternoon sun slowly sinks
Towards it’s surrounding mountain bed.
The river sings its secret sacred
Song as it keeps flowing along—
Sparkling, wild and free
On its way home to the sea.
