IN THE MOUNTAINS IN THE WOODS ALONE “I am grateful for the fury of the storm, and The peaceful power of this mountain solitude…” In the mountains, in the woods alone— Making firewood for the hearth at home, As blustery winds push a sky full of dark clouds, Threatening to let loose a torrential rain. I work hard and fast in a high state of flow, Knowing how difficult it will be for me If I am still on this mountainside when The heavy rain is unleashed to pelt my Coat, sting my face and make it hard to see. I am one who has worked alone through The intensest of storms in my parade of days— They have shaped my mind to remain calm Even in the fiercest tumult and strengthened This body to withstand screaming wind and wet. But inside my heart, a different kind of storm Is brewing deep in my soul as I am forced to face All the pain of all the years I carry, consequences Of terrible mistakes made long ago and the loss Of so many and so much that should have been. And yet, this spiritual warrior is wise enough to Remind myself to let go of regrets, to forgive myself And return to the sanctuary of this present moment From which all of my good is always flowing freely. Here, as I watch trees wildly dancing in the wind And hear it roaring through forest branches, I am grateful for the fury of the storm and The peaceful power of this mountain solitude.
