LESSONS FROM RIDING WAVES OF PAIN Alone In A Darkened Room I am sitting alone in this room With all the curtains drawn to keep Out the light, to keep it dark and safe From the bright glaring day outside. My eye, which went under the surgeon’s Knife, is now hurting, raw and sensitive, Throbbing with waves of piercing pain That I am riding on the sea of suffering. I keep both eyes squeezed tightly Shut as I ride the wild waves of agony surging, Cresting and pounding this bodily beach Far beyond any control I try to impose. This pain has blinded and brought me Back to focusing on just this moment And the next, for I cannot move or Go anywhere but this dark space. My world is confined to sitting here, For every new minute brings sharp jabs Of pain, like knives piercing my eye and All this sudden hurting makes me awaken To levels of attention and awareness That are normally beyond my reach. I am learning that every experience, Even ones like this day of excruciating pain, Are ultimately lessons in opening my heart And loving myself and all of life— Whatever comes day by day, Whatever lessons I must learn, come what may. These pulsations of pain are a privilege, not A punishment, as my mind complains— This pain is part of my path to healing, A necessary cost from a surgery of Cutting through and removing a growth, Big and bulging with veins that Was warping my eyes and threatened My precious vision and ability to see. This pain is a gift from the doctor and Nurses and others who were on the team Brought together with a total dedication To saving my eyes and precious sight. This relentless pain, so hard to bear, Is a small sacrifice that I heartily accept And lovingly and gratefully embrace as the Price of living the rest of my life in the Light.
