MAN FROM THE DEEP COUNTRY The Strain Of Living In The City To Make A Living Far From Home I know my hat is stained From the sweat of Working through the long hot Summer days and That my clothes are Not the latest fashion And torn in odd places From cutting trails through Thorny brush down to the creek On our homestead On Still Mountain, But I do not care. I know I stand out Among the crowds Of fashionable ones Hurrying along city streets, Thronging department stores And upper middle class neighborhoods, But I do not care— For on Still Mountain There are no human Standards to live up to And I am one with The eagles soaring Over the ridge, the Trees bending and dancing In the wind. If you look into my eyes, You will see clear Blue sky painted With the clouds and colors Of unpolluted dawn, The wheeling of bright stars, Burning through our cool nights— And if you touch me You will hear the Clear melodies of the Creek flowing in its bed Where salamanders hide And tiny trout play. Thus I belong to the Deep country even though For this time and for Money’s sake I live In the cold city Far from my true home— But I cannot And will never forget Who and what I really am— A man from the deep country, Who carries country views And country ways within me As my heart always longs To be back in the mountains— For only those Who remember where They came from Are able to find Their way home again. —April 16, 1986 Still Mountain Retreat First Gate Road
