UNITED IN SPIRIT Even When We Must Part We linger at the gate As long as we can, Ignoring all the calls to Board the waiting airliner, Trying to hold off separating Our intertwined bodies and hearts Until the very last minute, Stretching time out forever With a last deep lingering kiss, Our eyes gazing at each other, Holding back rivers of tears, Knowing we must say goodbye And each go our different Ways in painful solitude. I know when my plane Rises from your desert town, The real world we cherish Will become unreal to me… Our house, places, mountains, Trails, and cafes we love, And most of all, my beloved, Will all abruptly disappear When I walk down the long Red upward curving ramp And into the waiting plane. At the last moment, Just before turning towards Separate worlds, we held hands And said to each other— “This is like dying slowly.. But please let us remember— We are united always in Spirit even when our bodies Must live and breathe far apart.” October 18, 1984 Sky Harbor Airport, Phoenix, Arizona

STARS ON THE EARTH Flying fast and high In this silver winged plane Through cloudy and empty space, I look down from my window seat And find comfort from my tears To see the lights of towns And solitary houses Glimmering on the Dark desert floor Like crisp and Tantalizing stars Fallen from the Soaring night sky. SOARING TOGETHER ON EAGLE WINGS Our plane is so Filled with light That it feels like I am straddling The neck of a Huge eagle Flying swiftly Onwards Through the dark Night sky. I feel our wings Tremble in the higher elevations. I feel time flowing At five hundred and fifty seven Miles per hour As I am carried From one life to another. The silence is loud With the roaring jets And the air sliced by our Silver wings. Behind me, my beloved, Whose mind and spirit is Intertwined with mine, Has reached our lonely home By now in unwanted solitude. Ahead are my work And my children and a Much slower flow of time Called separation and weeks Of endless silent solitary Nights and days. Below our wings the desert’s Wild mountain country Is becoming a like a Forgotten dream As we fly fast and high Towards the Pacific, While inside this soaring plane I struggle to open my own Spirit’s wings into This space of light Called communion and trust— The space of perfection And love that arises When I wake up and remember I can never be alone or Ever separated from My soul’s true love Who is inside me even now As we rise and fly together On our eagle wings.
