ONE BIRD SINGING A SYMPHONY OF LOVE THROUGH THE COLD AND LONELY NIGHT One single bird has been singing Its lilting song outside my window From the time the sun set On a perfect day until now— Singing and singing through the Hours into this totally dark And cold middle of the night Without even the moon to Illuminate the world— His song is complex, like a Symphony with many instruments That rises and falls as it Surges on and on and on— It is too cold and too dark and Every other bird is sleeping somewhere With their heads tucked under their Wings, staying warm and silent, While this one bird keeps on singing Its happy uplifting song That pushes back the darkness, That warms up the cold, That is the song of joy being Fully and beautifully expressed. Maybe he is singing in hopes of Attracting his true love to come flying To his side out of the lonely night— But his song is happy, with no longing Or sadness or neediness in it, Like the song of one who knows Himself, confident and complete, As if this is his world free of Any need except to keep on singing— Why he keeps on singing his heart out To a silent and unresponsive world, When it is unclear if anyone hears Or cares or listens at all is a Mystery I need not solve for his Sweet song comforts me as I hear his endless singing in creatively Composing a new symphony of the heart— I believe this one solitary bird is Simply expressing his joy and delight Of being alive to light his way Even on this cold night devoid Of warmth and bereft of light. A MINOR BIRD By Robert Frost I have wished a bird would fly away And not sing by my house all day; Have clapped my hands at him from the door When it seemed as if I could bear no more. The fault must partly have been in me. The bird was not to blame for his key. And of course there must be something wrong In wanting to silence any song. —From Frost’s Book “West Running Brook”
