OUR TREASURE HOUSE Scattered across the hillside Are piles of timbers, Neatly organized according to size, Plywood and roofing felt and Windows, a stainless steel kitchen Sink, an old wood stove and Other treasures leaning against An ancient oak tree— All parts of the house that is yet To be, all gathered through many Nights of roaming faraway city streets, Ranging from one debris box To another, sitting in front of Old houses being made new— Their old parts being thrown Away, no longer useful to them, But useful to me, a man willing to Claim thrown away things as useful Treasures, found free and wonderfully. On those nights of searching, I always Feel like a solitary sail ship’s captain, Sailing from one island to another, Among the sea of machines and buildings, My trusty hammer sword in its sheath As I climb into the dumpster islands To find the treasures hidden within. Now these small and large finds, Collected through many winter nights, Are gathered on this hillside On this early spring morning, Cleaned of nails and past identities, Ready to be formed into a new house, To become part of our new home. Doors, windows, bathtub and sink, 2 by 4’s, 4 by 4’s, 2 by 6’s and 6 by 6 beams, Carried here on my shoulders, One by one until now nicely stacked In piles destined to help build our dream— As each will find its place in the scheme, With nothing wasted or unwanted, Even shattered concrete blocks In big flat pieces will become The steps of the trail winding up This steep hill to the treasure house. Five Haiku On a withered branch A crow has settled— Autumn nightfall. One moment of light Illuminates a lifetime Of hazy darkness. Three for tea and treats— A winter afternoon spent In quiet moments. The pond brightens as I reflect on life and light— Time spent in loving. Many many fish Swimming in one corner of Sky reflecting pond. 1985
