OUR LOVE IS AS STRONG AS A FORTRESS, AS BEAUTIFUL AS SPRING FLOWERS, AS SWEET AS THE FALLING RAIN —for Joan “My first love story…we met one evening While exploring an old fort on the edge of the sea And then were separated with me living nearby and Her returning to her faraway home…this poem is About one of my solitary walks in the fort, communing Spiritually with her while we were separated.” Showers beat a wet tempo On the windowpanes. The fort is silent, gloomy, Wrapped in the rain’s arms And the sea’s eyes… Too full of beauty, nothing speaks. Water comes trickling down old bricks, Waves wash over fallen walls. I find assuagement in Watching the rain spending Itself outside the bastion halls— Beating shells like mortar craters Into the sand. Solitude is A lonely state of mind. I am lonely, And here in this ancient dark wetness, I feel as old in years as the Monumental structure over me, Around me. I seem to be it. I have old names scrawled on My innermost walls, And for many years Have been battered by relentless Destruction, been abandoned, Taken up again, abandoned again— But even in the darkest places, I find warmth, for our love Burns like a bright flame In my yearning heart— Our love is inexhaustible. I feel our love and cannot be cold— Though rain beats me, winds Lash me, loneliness cuts me— I cannot but love you more and More and more Because I am loved by you so completely I am made free to love Everything— I love even the rain, The wind, the loneliness, the Heartache and bleeding it causes. Our love is as strong as this Ancient fortress, as beautiful As the spring flowers growing On its embankments, as sweet As the rain which continues To fall, always Nourishing us And our ever-growing love.
