The Gift of Another Day on Earth Coming inside after working out In the cold and swirling fog, With fingers and feet like ice, I am grateful for this warm room. I am bundled up in layers of coats, With a hat of woven alpaca wool On my head and a hot coffee cup Wrapped in my big thick hands. These are days in the depths of winter, When the morning world is white With frost and frigid difficulties while the Sun is but a distant memory. As I work to do what needs to Be done, I consciously choose To rejoice and keep a lilting song Playing in my still beating heart. Though it could be said in complaint That these are the worst of times, I choose to celebrate instead this gift Of another day on planet earth. In a little while, I’ll go back out to work, No longer allowing any dark thoughts to rule, Happy that I am fully alive and free, Soaring on the power of my own positive And loving attitude. Perfect Stillness and Rest When it seems as if I have lost my way In the demands of Living day by day, I remind myself that there Is always a secret sanctuary waiting For me in the heart of This very present moment. When my own mind wants To do nothing but complain and Criticize in a flood of Negative thoughts devoid of light, When I am about to be overwhelmed By stormy skies and painful losses, I remind myself that everything I know, love and care about is temporary And that this too shall pass… And I find, over and over again, A deep profound peace of being that Is just beyond a positive shift in attitude, When I choose to come within, Riding my breath to freedom Behind closed eyes with mind and body Brought back to perfect stillness and rest. Which most of us do not even realize we have,
is our innate ability to choose
our attitude and what to focus on.” Chinmayan
