The Joys of Flight
And then the eagle
Suddenly spreads it’s wings
And breaks out of the
Spiraling dive into a
Smooth gliding soaring
Fantasy of flight
A few feet above
The silver lake.
I watch from the ridge,
Watching this eagle at play,
Pushing himself to the edges
Of his eagle abilities.
For one moment
Our gazes lock—
His steady, clear and certain,
Mine, wistful and
Wavering a little
For I too know
The joys of flight,
And the difficulties
Of going for mastery…
He cries one long
Sharp eagle’s cry,
Lifts his wings at the tips,
And swoops close over
This high ridge,
Then swiftly descends
Into the valley
And the coming night.

The Freedom of Wings Like a bird I am longing for the freedom Of the deep, deep sky, Whether it is stormy Or clear, I am hungry For the spreading Of wings Into boundless vast space. November 1979

The Light of Truth When pain becomes my Unwelcome visitor, appearing Unexpectedly out of nowhere When I am the least prepared and Pushing me through dark spaces Of despair which seem Endless and beyond repair— It is then that all these years Of prayerfully seeking God and Growing faith in the most difficult Circumstances remind me that “This too shall pass” and only The light is truth, and only the Love flowing from my longing Heart can ever save and Redeem me in the trials of life. When pain becomes a suddenly Arriving visitor, I greet it at the Door of my own mind, Closely watching my thoughts And not allowing the dark ones To rule as I battle to rise, Knowing surely that every difficulty Is a teaching and a training, A blessing bearing many gifts, Revealed through my adamantine Faith that God is ever leading Me in to higher and greater good.
