WHEN I FALL INTO DARKNESS When darkness covered my soul, Like swirling cloudy mist, Blotting out all brightness— I tumbled in darkness, Woke in darkness and Walked in darkness, Not knowing why it had come, Or where from or how to get free… But then I came to understand That this darkness shows Me where I have gone wrong— When I forget the Divine, Placing my attention or Yearning or trust or desire On other things… Then, inevitably, darkness comes, For the Divine is The brightness of the soul And not any other thing. When I do not answer The call of the spirit To spend time alone With my self and God; When I place other’s desires Above the Divine’s directions, Or my own spirit’s needs, Then the darkness will surely And swiftly sweep in… Realizing this, I went alone Into the cold, dark night To climb the slopes Of Prayer Mountain Until I found my way to My secret sacred sanctuary In a cave hidden from Normal vision until my Inner eyes of the heart opened And I could lay my self Before the Lord— He touches me so softly, He teaches me so gently, He guides me so quietly, He heals me so quickly, He feeds me eternally, He loves me so bountifully, He knows me so thoroughly, He trusts me implicitly, He flows through me Even in my darkness, He protects me even when I can’t feel his Presence… And in the cave, high on The side of Prayer Mountain, He lifted away the darkness, He opened my heart, Releasing its bright pure love— He restored my spirit, And taught me the lessons Of living fully in the light I have forgotten so often— O my Beloved, O my Heavenly Father And sweet Divine Mother, O lord of the universe— I want to never forget You— I want to never be separated From your healing presence Ever again. This poem has many levels of meaning, each more profound that the one below it, and is one of Rumi’s “Doorways to the Divine”,..addressed to his guru and God at once.
