A NIGHT AWAY —For Joan Traveling up the coast, We turned off the main road Onto a tiny winding sliver Of asphalt that carried Us on its back High into the mountains, Up through the clouds, past agaves Perched on stark, steep hillsides, Past a bobcat crouching in the bushes, Through stands of redwood trees, With little streams tinkling at their feet, Twisting and turning, ever upwards, Rising higher and higher Until the vast Pacific Ocean Became a small blue speck And then disappeared From the rear view mirror. On and on we traveled Until we passed over a Ridge top and dropped down Into another world On the other side— A world of wilderness without men or The presence of men except For the road itself, carved Out of sheer stone cliffs. This was what we were looking for— A night away from people, A night to be in the arms Of nature, alone together In a secluded forest And such was our wish So sweetly fulfilled That we found a grove Of ancient oaks with Wide spreading branches Making a shelter for us, Deserted and solitary, and In the fading last minutes Of daylight, pitched our little Blue tent, then sat Under the trees, calming Ourselves from the driving, Letting outer activity drop away Like a lake becoming calm After a stormy wind. Then I read To you from our book Until night retrieved all light And we lit a little fire, Not for warmth, but for Gazing into, and we talked From the heart in it’s Flickering light, while Creatures of the night, Hummed and sang their white Sounds all around us, Singing and singing all night, Celebrating it with us As we made pure love, Embracing each other On a different kind Of journey, going to a Space above all mountains— Two winged spirits rising And becoming one in that Solitary night’s fire of Being Love for each other. Being Love Do not try to hold onto The love You are now experiencing… Holding on slows the flow In and out of heart’s ocean, While fear and attachment Clouds the healing waters. Simply let love Come to you and Flow through you In an unimpeded stream. When it looks like There is no Love coming From the outer world, Tune in to its sweet Flow within And then let your Love be fully expressed From the inside out. Love with a pure motivation— Always focusing on serving The One through serving the many… Being love without Desire or selfishness or any Impure motivation, Desiring only to become A pure vessel of Love And Light on earth. For You I want to be A ray of light Breaking through Grey clouds When your mind Is dark. I want to be The friend you can Always turn to When all friends Have turned away In misunderstanding Pettiness. I want to be An affirmation of The universal love That never turns Away from you, But waits patiently For you to discover And have and claim. I want to bring Insight, illumination And meaning Into the confusion, Dark spaces And meaningless Feelings that creep Into even the Best lived of lives. I want you to know ‘And have access To your greatest good— Which is the same as Mine and everyone Else’s. It is for this reason That I have done everything. It is to this end That I have Dedicated this life And all it’s energies. May we meet On the mountain Of all seeing, Greeting each other In the space Of clear being! October 4, 1984
