WALKING INSIDE THE STORM I Came To Know That Love And Loving Are Even More Important Than Living —For Joan The paper is damp and I’m damp. It’s been raining, and I’ve been walking in the rain, A long way in the rain up the beach. I met no one and no one met me, Walking those long white miles Beside the crashing sea. I came upon a big blue crab Crouching in the sand, With snapping claws upraised, Expecting an attack. We were both too weary of such things To do anything but look at each other— His bright green eyes Raised high above a whispering mouth On little white stalks And after a long gaze, I silently walked on. It was high tide and I was careful of the scars left By beach buggy tire tracks Making deep wild grooves There, outside the tidal zone. I was careful too, of the ragged wings And bleached and broken bones Of cast up, dead sea things. I remembered other nights— Rain too, and wet hair and Drenched and dripping body, Taking off the old shirt And feeling the rain’s drumbeat on my shoulders, The cracked shells and Burnt out ends of days Being washed up, washed away Above a harbor full of conflicts And wind tossed words, And sea swept thoughts— The storm breaking not only All around this frail body, But also deep within myself Until I felt more pitted, More battered than those white bones Mingling in the sand. Then and now, as I continued Along the beach inside the storm, Carrying the fury and being Carried by it, I came to know That love and loving Are even more important than living. I contemplated laying down on The wet sand and soaking into it And becoming part of the nameless beach, Far from conflicts and pains And struggles, becoming just Another grain of sand Among trillions of grains… But as I walked, Talking thus with the wind And my own heart, I saw Little white flowers Growing bravely along the margin strand, And more crabs crouching in the sand, And gulls flying limply Against the wind, and I was ashamed Not to do as much as they were doing.
