THE POWER AND BLESSING OF A GOOD DAY’S WORK To be able to do this rough work Of these big hands making firewood— To be able to physically do all That comes into my world to be Done is a privilege and a blessing Which this man intends to maintain Until his last days on earth. I now understand what my father meant When he said “Son, you have no idea How important and satisfying it is To be able to do a good day’s work, Getting done whatever needs to be done.” When he came to believe he could no Longer take care of the gardens and chores On his homestead where there was always So much to be attended to everyday, Then he aged before our eyes, Convincing himself that he was getting old When he knew he could not do As he had always done— Making every day count with endless Strings of fulfilling accomplishments. Now that I am in an aging body, I am careful to maintain a Vigorous, ageless can do attitude— By not allowing even a thought or Words describing myself as “old”— For as I watch each breath, Living fully present in this glorious now, I value work as dharma practice, Work as the ultimate heart meditation, Work as a vital and demanding part of This man’s path to power and Realization. So nice to have a newsletter about work and spirituality. As I sit here doing security at a landfill. It reminds me that I can be the lotus in the mud.
